Hospitality (BTEC)


This course is for those who have an interest in acquiring skills and knowledge relevant to the Hospitality & Catering Sector.

The study of BTEC Hospitality gives students the opportunity to learn about the hospitality industry and develop the transferable skills linked to the world of work. Students will engage in learning a range of culinary skills and have the opportunity to take an active role in serving food and drink. They will take part in a number of trips to look at different aspects of the industry, the study undertaken is work-related.

  • To explore the hospitality industry
  • To examine trends and how they impact on the industry
  • To investigate careers within the industry
  • To develop practical capability
  • To develop creativity in preparing and presenting food
  • To gain confidence in serving food and drink
  • To develop customer service skills
  • To gain an understanding of how customer service impacts on hospitality businesses.

What will I do in lessons?

Alongside theory sessions, students will be expected to cook and will be given one week’s notice to prepare and source ingredients. Students will be expected to wear aprons and chef jackets for every practical lesson.

How will I be assessed?  

  • 25% of the course mark is one, externally assessed, written paper exam.
  • 75% of the course mark will be assessed by coursework – this will include the production of portfolios, presentations, practical projects, and staff observations.
  • For each unit you complete you will be awarded a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* grade and this will lead to an overall award. All students will be expected to produce work to at least pass standard.

Units to be covered are as follows:

Unit 1 - Introducing the Hospitality Industry - written exam

Unit 2 - Working in the Hospitality Industry- course work

Unit 3 - Food Safety and Health and Safety in Hospitality - coursework

Unit 6 - Planning, Preparing, Cooking and Finishing Food - coursework.

Additional Opportunities:

As a vocational course, all students will be working as closely as Lesley walters 1possible to real-world situations. 

We are supported by a number of local hotels and companies and we complete a range of visits including The Chewton Glen Hotel, The Captains Club Hotel, The Marsham Court Hotel and various other Hospitality and Catering venues and events such as Food Festivals.

Beyond Key Stage 4

This course will enable you to continue with further education and progress to Level 3 courses and university pathways and vocational careers within the Hospitality, Catering and Leisure industry.
