 A popular alternative to GCSE study, a BTEC course uses a range of different assessment methods, allowing you to broaden your skills in assignment writing, producing booklets to presentations and an external exam, essentials skills which will support you throughout your educational journey and into working industries.

This course is for those who enjoy learning and stretching themselves in a range of different learning environments, from the classroom to the sports hall.

You should:

  • Be keen to learn about our body, technology in sport and how we can improve sports performance.
  • Be keen to display analysis through written formats and presentations
  • Be able to communicate and self-reflect on your own performance in planning and leading sports sessions.

Teaching and Learning:

Lessons will be delivered through a blended approach of different methods, combining practical skills with theoretical learning will create an opportunity for learners to apply theoretical knowledge to tangible learning experiences.

You will study sport specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment including:

  • The development of core knowledge and understanding of the body and itsSport2 response to exercise, the body’s ability to increase its fitness levels and the attributes of a sports leader.
  • The development and application of skills such as: analysing research information, planning, leading and evaluating, presenting, communicating and problem solving
  • The development of self, peer and professional analysis. You will learn though a well-balanced range of methods, which combine practical skills with theoretical learning.Your lessons will take place in classrooms; however, you will also use our full range of college sports facilities, both indoor and outdoor.

Importantly, we have excellent relationships with local employers in the sports and leisure sector. This means you will be able to secure additional work experience to help broaden your experience.

Assessment:

The qualification consists of three components that will give students the opportunity to explore different sporting aspects.  These include developing an understanding of physiology and anatomy, the use of technology in sport, components of fitness, along with practical participation in sport, applying rules and regulations and identifying ways to further improve sporting performance.

The course is assessed through two different methods, internal assessment where students will sit two Pearson set assignments in class under exam conditions over the course of a four-week block.  Students will also sit one external exam, under exam conditions which is set and marked by Pearson.

Assessment:


At The Grange School, the Level 2 Btec Sport lasts for two years, consisting of four units and is equivalent to one GCSE. One of the units is an online exam; the other 3 are coursework based.

There are also work-related units with assignments and projects based on realistic work place situations, activities and demands.

Who is the course for?

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Sport has been designed primarily for young people aged 14 to 19 who may wish to explore a vocational route throughout Key Stage 4.

It has been developed to:

  • encourage personal development through practical participation and performance in a range of sports and exercise activities
  • give learners a wider understanding and appreciation of health-related fitness, sports and exercise through a selection of optional specialist units
  • encourage learners to develop their people, communication, planning and team-working skills by having the opportunity to select from optional units available in the qualification structure
  • provide education and training for sport, leisure and recreation employees
  • give opportunities for sport, leisure and recreation employees to achieve a nationally recognised level 1 or level 2 vocationally-specific qualification
  • give learners the opportunity to progress to other vocational qualifications, such as the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Sport or Sport and Exercise Sciences, or on to GCE AS or A level, and, in due course, to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector

What will I do on the course?

As well as learning about the wider aspect of the sports industry, you will learn and develop skills and knowledge of coaching and leadership as well as learning how to plan and deliver fitness programmes. There is a large practical element to this course so it is essential you enjoy sport.
